How to choose a tree surgeon in West Wales

Questions to ask about the job, qualifications, insurance, waste removal and access before arranging tree work.

Describe the work clearly

Explain whether the job involves pruning, crown reduction, removing a tree, stump grinding, storm damage or woodland work. Share photographs if useful, and tell the contractor about nearby buildings, roads, power lines, boundaries and restricted access.

Ask about experience and qualifications

Ask which team members will do the work and what qualifications or training are relevant to the task. Check insurance details directly rather than relying on directory wording. For complex or high-risk work, ask how the job will be assessed and controlled.

Check tree protection and permissions

Trees may be covered by a Tree Preservation Order or stand within a conservation area. Before work starts, ask the contractor and relevant council what checks or permissions may apply. Do not assume that a tree can be felled just because it is on private land.

Agree waste removal and access

Ask whether branches, logs, woodchip and stumps will be removed or left on site, and whether access equipment or traffic management is included. Agree what happens if the scope changes after work begins.

Compare written quotations

Where practical, give suppliers the same brief so that the scope, clean-up, disposal and timing can be compared fairly. This directory does not verify qualifications, insurance or availability; confirm these directly.
