Planning tree work and seasonal considerations

A practical checklist for planning pruning, removals and tree work while considering wildlife, access and local rules.

Start with the problem you are trying to solve

Overhanging branches, deadwood, storm damage, shading, roots or planned building work each call for a different assessment. A qualified tree professional can help explain the available options, which may include pruning rather than removal.

Protected trees and local planning

Some trees are protected by a Tree Preservation Order or conservation-area controls. Check the relevant council's guidance before proceeding. A contractor's site visit can help identify questions to resolve, but do not treat this directory as permission to carry out the work.

Wildlife and nesting birds

Ask how the contractor checks for active nests and other wildlife before work. Wildlife protections can apply year-round depending on the species and circumstances, so timing should be decided with appropriate advice rather than assuming a single safe season.

Access, neighbours and safety

Tell the supplier about narrow lanes, shared drives, overhead cables, nearby buildings and public footpaths. Agree who will notify neighbours if access or noise may affect them.

Confirm the finished result

Set out what must be removed, chipped, retained or left for firewood, and how the garden or site should be left. Ask for a written quote and keep a record of any agreed changes.
